When you need a tarp instead of a repair
A tarp is the right call when the roof is open and the weather is not finished.
- Shingles stripped down to the decking or underlayment
- A limb, branch or debris has punctured the deck
- Water already coming through a ceiling or light fitting
- More rain forecast before a crew can do the permanent repair
- An adjuster has not been out yet and the damage needs to stop spreading
What we do when we get there
We photograph the damage before we cover anything, because once a tarp is on, an adjuster cannot see what was underneath.
Then the tarp goes on properly: run over the ridge where we can, fastened into sound decking rather than weighted down, and edges sealed so wind cannot get under it and take it off overnight.
Should you tarp it yourself?
If it is a small area, the roof is low, and the weather has passed, sometimes yes.
If it is steep, wet, two storeys, or still blowing, no. More people are hurt falling off roofs after storms than during them. We would rather come out than read about it.
Tarping and your insurance claim
Emergency mitigation is usually covered, and most policies expect you to prevent further damage rather than let it run.
We document what we tarp and why, so it goes into the claim properly. If the damage does not warrant a claim we will tell you that too, because a claim you did not need costs you money.
Hurricane season response
Gulf hurricane season runs June through November, and the busy stretch is August to October.
